Stories From Ritsuko's Bilingual and Multicultural Life

Foreward by Bob Crabb

If there is such a thing as destiny, then mine was to meet an extraordinary young woman named Ritsuko.

In November of 1974, Ritsuko and I were each on separate life paths on which marriage was not even a consideration for the foreseeable future. But then one evening, at the insistence of a couple of friends, we each went to a party that neither of us really wanted to attend. It would have been easy for one or both of us to refuse the invitation, but instead, we both went, and there we met. Soon afterward, we began dating. Our relationship developed very quickly after that, and we were married in April 1975.

Fast forward to the year 2025. That was the year that both of us turned 75, and it was the year when we celebrated being married for 50 years. As if all that wasn't enough for 2025, it was also the year that Ritsuko decided that she would like to begin to share with the public some of the stories of her remarkable life. Since many of her stories are based on events that I either witnessed or was a part of, I vowed to do what I could in helping her to succeed in that endeavor. I thought that the best way in which I could help would be to develop this website which she could use in presenting her stories to whomever was interested in reading.

I have learned over the past few decades, through trial and many errors, not to assume or second guess what is on Ritsuko's mind. So, as I was fussing about with the bits and bytes of making this coded contraption function as a proper website, I asked her if she had a theme in mind.

"Yes! I will call it my bilingual and multi cultural life!"

Of course! That certainly made sense.

I have always been fascinated and deeply respectful of the way that she is able to move in and out of two languages, her native Japanese and her second language, English. Likewise she has, with great enthusiasm and joy, assimilated into American culture and lifestyle, both personally and professionally, while maintaining the essence of her Japanese culture and values as the foundation of who she is.

Having listened for many years to Ritsuko telling humorous and insightful stories about her life experiences, I look forward to reading what will come forth from her beautifully creative mind.

Ritsuko will be writing new content as her memories and ideas manifest themselves into words, so please check back frequently for new content.

Thank you for visiting Ritsuko's website,
Bob Crabb

Shogun Cultural Experiences merges a walking tour, sweets, and the music of traditional Japan (Japan)
Tue, 05 May 2026 05:00:42 +0000

A limited tour in Kagurazaka, Tokyo invites guests to “Discover Edo Through All Five Senses” in one morning with full English services. Kagurazaka is a central Tokyo neighborhood with refined charm that was once located on the edge of Edo Castle and has connections dating back to Japan’s third “great unifier” and shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa, […]
Seaweed bread is one of the most unusual baked goods in all of Japan (Japan)
Tue, 05 May 2026 03:00:46 +0000

A unique way to eat your greens in Tokyo. Japan has a knack for taking the familiar and elevating it to realms we never thought possible. A great example of that can be found at Takase Yogashi, a long-established store founded over a century ago, in 1920. ▼ 洋菓子 or “yogashi” translates as “western confectionery”. […]
Is Mister Donut’s all-you-can-eat Donut Buffet still worth it? (Japan)
Tue, 05 May 2026 01:00:45 +0000

We love Japan’s favorite donut chain as much as the next foodie, but you’ve got to eat a lot to get your money’s worth. Looking back, the last time we didn’t want to eat a donut was…uh, actually, we’re not sure. We seem to vaguely remember that there may have been somewhere in our past […]
Japanese hair salons going bankrupt in record numbers (Japan)
Mon, 04 May 2026 17:30:54 +0000

Salons are dying in more ways than one. One of the great things about gradually losing my hair is that I don’t have to worry about getting it cut in any significant way. I can get the job done myself with some electric clippers these days, which is good, because the place where I used […]
Uniqlo’s high-end sunglasses are a fashion minefield for anyone who isn’t Mr. Sato (Japan)
Mon, 04 May 2026 15:00:32 +0000

Does the brand’s most expensive eyewear require a fashion god to pull them off? Due to Uniqlo’s affordable prices and decent quality, it’s probably safe to say that there are more people in Japan who have an article of clothing from the brand than not. Despite the general trend of rising prices throughout the country, […]
Police in Osaka file charges against resident for serial pigeon/crow feeding (Japan)
Mon, 04 May 2026 13:00:02 +0000

After more than a decade of incidents, legal action finally taken. The authorities in Osaka’s Sumiyoshi Ward tried being lenient. Since over a decade ago, residents in the area around Abikocho and Nagai Stations on the JR Hanwa Line and Osaka Metro subway network had been complaining about a certain individual’s nocturnal activities. Repeatedly, this […]
Beard Papa goes beyond just matcha with its new premium green tea cream puffs (Japan)
Mon, 04 May 2026 05:00:41 +0000

Grown-in-the-shade green tea gets its time to shine. As green tea and green tea sweets continue to grow in popularity around the world, so too do attempts to upsell it. Outside Japan, you may, for example, encounter cafes and confectioners billing their premium products as using “ceremonial matcha,” which isn’t an actual classification in Japanese […]
Eating cheap sushi in a narrow building in Tokyo is an adventure for bold diners (Japan)
Mon, 04 May 2026 03:00:21 +0000

We play culinary roulette at a cheap restaurant in Kabukicho. When you’re looking for somewhere to eat in the middle of Kabukicho, Tokyo’s notorious red-light district, the choices can be as overwhelming as the bright lights and multi-storey buildings towering over you. What can help in these situations is some advice from a local who’s […]
Hayao Miyazaki’s Whisper of the Heart concept art revealed in new Ghibli illustration book (Japan)
Mon, 04 May 2026 01:00:21 +0000

Image Board Collection series turns spotlight on two classic Studio Ghibli anime. Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki is famous for having a very hands-on approach to anime production, to the extent that he’ll sometimes just draw over an animator’s draft rather than verbally explain the changes he wants made. So Whisper of the Heart sticks […]
Samurai Coffee: Try Edo period coffee once enjoyed by Japanese warriors (Japan)
Sun, 03 May 2026 16:00:29 +0000

Cafe in Japan uses a recipe from an old document to recreate a historic brew. Japan might be commonly associated with tea, but coffee is also a big part of the culture, having first been introduced here during the Edo period (1603-1868). Back in those early days, coffee was seen as a luxury item imported from […]
